Scholarship for Zimbabweans:

This PhD scholarship is open specifically to Zimbabweans interested in researching urban issues in Harare, to begin this autumn.

The department of Geography, University of Sussex, has two fully funded PhD studentships to support the Migrants on the Margins research project. Migrants on the Margins is the Field Research Programme of the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute for British Geographers (RGS/IBG). Research aims to contribute to the urban governance of new migration into underserviced urban areas of selected cities, in contexts of environmental change and political uncertainty. The RGS/IBG Field Research Programme involves partnerships with other UK universities (SOAS and Durham) as well as research institutes in Colombo, Dhaka, Harare and Hargeisa.
The two PhD candidates will focus their research on either the city of Colombo (Sri Lanka) or Harare (Zimbabwe). The scholarships, co-funded by the RGS/IBG and University of Sussex, cover all fees at non-EU student level and three years’ annual stipend at current Research Councils UK level (£14,296 for 2016/17).

PhD Position at the University of Konstanz

The University of Konstanz, with its “Institutional Strategy to promote Top-Level Research”, has been receiving continuous funding since 2007 within the framework of the Excellence Initiative by the German Federal and State Governments.

Ghana – Project Manager (Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI))

DESCRIPTION

NRGI seeks a full-time, Ghana Manager to coordinate and oversee the implementation of NRGI’s activities with a variety of agents of change in Ghana – decisions makers in parliament and the government, as well as civil society actors, media, and the Public Interest and Accountability Committee. This position will be responsible for ensuring synergies between NRGI’s various projects at the country level, responding to the changing environment and seizing opportunities for engagement.

The Ghana country portfolio includes work with various stakeholders to promote the more effective management of Ghana’s mineral and petroleum resources, including through capacity development, technical assistance and the provision of policy advice to Ghana’s parliament, the Public Interest and Accountability Committee, the executive, civil society and media, and through support to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) process. This position is a unique opportunity to work across multiple different stakeholders, to broker dialogue and improve good governance in the natural resource sector.

The position will be based in Accra, Ghana, where our Africa Regional office is located. The post will temporarily report to the Africa Deputy Director, also based in Accra, while recruitment for an Africa Director is underway.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the refinement and coordinate implementation of the Ghana country strategy and the country program team, including coordinating across different activities with an eye toward synergies to enhance our impact at the country level;
  • Lead in the development and tracking of a country work plan, ensuring progress toward country strategy objectives and achievement of program requirements;
  • Seek out synergies between regional programmes and opportunities for collaboration amongst NRGI offices;
  • Foster relationships with key agents of change – ranging from media to civil society to policy makers in governments and parliament to ensure a demand driven, responsive program of support and broker dialogue across actors;
  • Support as needed to develop and deliver targeted trainings to a variety of stakeholders, drawing on the organization’s expertise and resources;
  • Strategically monitor developments on the ground and identify opportunities to increase our impact through tailoring our programmatic work;
  • Identify and engage experts/advisors both internal and external on oil, gas and minerals for technical assistance on draft legislation, regulations and policies;
  • Lead monitoring and evaluation of the Ghana program to distil lessons learnt and share learning within the organization, with implementing partners and donors, as well as the broader network of oil, gas and mining stakeholders in Ghana;
  • Provide specific support to our projects focused on the Public Interest and Accountability Committee;
  • Manage the program’s administrative tasks, including drafting narrative reports, tracking activity expenditures, monitoring the program budget and assisting in drafting quarterly financial reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree; preferred masters degree in relevant field (economics, political science, law, public administration, development studies etc.);
  • At least a minimum of seven or eight years of relevant experience in running and managing projects in an international development context;
  • Experience with different stakeholders – media, government, parliamentary and civil society capacity development and network building in low income countries (prior experience with stakeholders in Ghana a plus);
  • Prior knowledge of Ghana’s extractive sector, governance and transparency context and development issues is desirable;
  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to manage several simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment is required;
  • Experience in conducting project impact monitoring and evaluation.
